Man Sentenced to 30 Years for 1994 Rape Case Solved by DNA Evidence

A 60-year-old North Carolina man was sentenced to 30 years in prison Tuesday in Spencer Circuit Court for the rape of a 19-year-old woman in 1994.

Robert Shelton was arrested after DNA evidence produced a match when the Owensboro, Kentucky Police Department and Indiana State Police reopened the cold case in 2022.

Shelton forced the woman to drive from Owensboro to Spencer County where the rape occurred.

Afterwards, he forced the victim to remain in the car as he drove them back to the downtown Owensboro area where he fled from the car never to be seen again.
